Environmental Survival with Gretchen Cordy

From Episode 205

Nature trail in Ashland City

Wild Side Guide and survivalist Gretchen Cordy (of TV’s hit show “Survivor”) shows us why all nature enthusiasts, from the weekend hiker to the experienced angler, need to take personal responsibility for the land and lakes of Tennessee. Gretchen suggests things you can do to keep our natural resources clean by leaving only footprints, and taking only photographs away from the outdoors. Something as little as a few feet of discarded fishing line, can cause a bird to get entangled and die. Removing a plant can deplete a resource, and cause soil erosion.

Gretchen introduced us to a group of Middle Tennesseans who have restored a 7 mile abandoned stretch of railroad, turning it into a refuge for wildlife, and a recreational area for hikers, birdwatchers, and photographers. It’s called the Cumberland River Bicentennial Trail, located in Ashland City, Tennessee. If you would like more information on the trail, you can visit their web site, or call the Ashland City Parks and Recreation Department for more information at: (615)792-2655.

If you are interested in walking the Cumberland River Bicentennial Trail, the main trailhead is located 1 mile north of the Ashland City Courthouse on Highway 12. Turn left on Chapmansboro Road. The start of the trail is located next to the saw mill.
