Nolichucky River

From Episode 312

Tumbling down out of the Appalachian Mountains into east Tennessee, the clear, cold water of the Nolichucky River provides rollicking rides and scenic beauty for those who wish to explore it. The Nolichucky isn’t as well known as other mountain streams nearby, but its challenging whitewater over a nine-mile stretch through one of the most picturesque gorges in North America makes it a favorite for those seeking adventure. Wild Side Guide Alan Griggs tells us that the Nolichucky is considered one of the cleanest rivers in the state and a haven for those who enjoy outdoors sports and recreation. But problems from its polluted past make its future less than certain.

The Nolichucky begins as the combination of two rivers in the mountains of North Carolina and winds its way down through Erwin, Tennessee, which is 15 miles south of Johnson City on US 181.

At Erwin, visit Cherokee Adventures, for a rafting adventure on the river. You can pick from several packages ranging from half-day excursions on calmer waters to overnight trips involving whitewater.

Call Cherokee Adventures at 1(800)445-7238 or (423)743-7733.
