Harpeth River Watershed
More than one million people live and work in and around the Harpeth River Watershed, encompassing 900 square miles in the Middle Tennessee area. For many, the Harpeth River and its tributaries are a popular recreation destination for swimming, canoeing, and fishing. The river is also a living laboratory for researchers studying its healthy population of fish, mussels, and insects. But, as Wild Side Guide Holly Sherwin tells us, development pressure near the river is mounting and erosion has damaged its banks. Natural vegetation has been stripped away, leaving the banks vulnerable to the harmful effects caused by rainwater and storm water drainage. Holly shows us how volunteer members of the Harpeth River Watershed Association are working together to restore one of the nation’s more biologically diverse watersheds for future generations. While Holly’s story reminds us of the Harpeth River’s challenges, it showcases the outstanding work by a dedicated group of people who recognize the value and beauty of the area.
