Anderson-Tully

From Episode 407

This bird lives in the Anderson-Tully Wildlife Management Area

The 12,000 acre Anderson-Tully Wildlife Management Area, located in extreme west Tennessee, is a remarkable achievement. For decades, the land has been one of west Tennessee’s most popular hunting areas as well as an important habitat for neo-tropical songbirds. In 2001, a unique combination of financial support from politicians, private business, The Nature Conservancy and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency resulted in the land being sold by the Anderson-Tully Company to The Nature Conservancy for $15,000,000. Plans call for TWRA to eventually own the land and to continue managing it as the agency has for 45 years.

Wild Side Guide Alan Griggs tells us that Anderson-Tully includes one of the last stands of bottomland hardwood forests along the Mississippi River corridor and, because of the sale, will remain a home to songbirds as well as big and small game for generations to come. The funding agreement reached among the parties involved makes Anderson-Tully the largest Forest Legacy Project in Tennessee’s history and the largest in the Tennessee chapter of The Nature Conservancy’s history.
