Project Tennessee Coon Hunt
On a cold, cold night deep in the hills along the Cumberland River outside of Clarksville, Tennessee, Wild Side Guide Craig Owensby meets up with some students from Montgomery Central High School, two experienced hunters, a TWRA wildlife officer and an old-timer who’s not so sure he wants to be there. The kids are members of their school’s outdoor club, Project Tennessee, the first of its kind in the state. They’ve joined the others for a night of good, old-fashioned coon hunting.
Project Tennessee is in its third year and has grown from ten students to close to 40 students, including several young women. For more about the organization, give the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency a call at 1-877-727-0014. Officer Jereme Odom is in charge. Be sure to visit TWRA’s web site for all the information you need about hunting in our great state: www.tnwildlife.org.
There are many coon hunting sites on the Internet, most with commercial ties. For information about raccoons in general, check out www.loomcom.com/raccoons.
