The Narrows of the Harpeth

From Episode 110

The Narrows of the Harpeth

Tennessee is full of prehistoric artifacts, and one of the most mysterious lies high above the river in the bluffs. It’s called a petrogliph, and Wild Side Guide Holly Sherwin takes us on a journey into the past. 70 years ago, Montgomery Bell, an entrepreneur and iron magnate cut a tunnel through the solid limestone hillside in order to divert the river to power his iron forge. But 700 years ago the area was a spiritual center of an ancient civilization where many think human sacrifices took place on the bluffs. A great way to experience the area is by canoe. It’s a bit on the chilly side, but the Narrows of the Harpeth State Park is open year round, there are several canoe companies that rent canoes there:
Foggy Bottom Canoe Rental: (615)952-4062
Tip-a-Canoe Stores, Inc.: (615)254-0836

Montgomery Bell S.P. also offers guided tours of the area.
