Tennessee Elk Release
Its been over 150 years since the majestic elk roamed free in Tennessee. But thanks to efforts spearheaded by the TWRA, Tennessee Conservation League, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and the Campbell County Outdoor Recreation Association, elk were welcomed back to the Volunteer State in December. Wild Side Guide Tom Spychalski takes us to the edges of the Big South Fork Recreation Area near Caryville, Tennessee for the historic event. Over 700 brave souls hiked in blizzard conditions to witnessed the Canadian elk herd exit four big trailers after their 3000 mile road trip into Campbell County.
In addition to medical testing to ensure that the elk were free of any diseases, the animals were fitted with radio transmitters to help monitor their movements in the 670,000-acres of Campbell, Scott, Morgan, Claiborne and Anderson counties which will be their new home. Youll have to be adventurous to see these elk at the Royal Blue Wildlife Management Area, since it's not fenced in. And yes for you hunters out there, a limited quota hunt is planned. If youd like more information on future elk releases, you can contact the TWRA Region III offices at: 1-800-262-6704.
